Day 9 - Thursday 15th June
Opononi
Dolphin Lodge and The Hokianga Harbour
Woke up this morning to a high thin cloud blocking the
warmth of the sun and it was to be like that for the rest of the day. There was
a chilly wind from the East as well which made being outdoors unpleasant.
After breakfast we travelled south through Omapere to the Hokianga Lookout Point that dominates the Hokianga Harbour bar.
... and the harbour itself
This was the site of Kupe’s landing in 1150, an amazing achievement for the time.
On a nicer day, it would have been spectacular, but on this day, the wind was keen and unpleasant. Still had amazing views back over the Hokianga.
We drove back to Opononi and had a coffee at the Landing Thai Café. We went back to the caravan to collect some bits and pieces, and drove down to the Town Centre and parked the car where we had a view out over the sea to have our picnic lunch – too cold to sit outside.
